OK idiot raising hand asking for help in streaming.

I've installed EWA 61 and the latest VLC.

I am assuming that when I ask for a stream through EWA that the VLC is started on the gbpvr server in strea mode.

On my other pc I go to EWA and click on a show and get a new window which I click on "Stream Now".

Web Stream Player window pops up and I leave the default options (Stream Player of VLC etc). Note that the stramer port is the same as my EWA port that I configured in gbpvr (I had changed it for a false sense of security). So I click on Start Stream and it says that the server is now streaming. Click on Launch External Player and instead of save file I open it and VLC pops open. but nothing then. After you stop laughing can someone post the obvious mistake or step I'm missing please.

Streamer port needs to be different than EWA port.

You are correct....when you click on stream now (in EWA on the client PC) and set your streaming settings and then click Start Stream VLC is started on the GBPVR host pc using the settings you configured....it will steam the video on the port you set.

When you click on Launch External Player (I recommend using the external player option and to use VLC as your client) you will get a pop-up box asking you to open or save it.....you want to open it......this file contains the correct URL and Port for your client viewer to open up and begin recieving the stream.

And honestly....I am not laughing..... Wink

hi UJB - me again

i have a similar issue - i get all the expected prompts and media player opens but it seems to hang - checked the port numbers are different and all but nothing happens - - do any codecs need to be installed on the machine you are streaming to ?

if so then thats my issue but i thought they default option streams to wmv which media player should be able to play now worries

If you are using WM Player to view your streams you may need to have codecs installed......VLC (another main reason to use it over WM Player) is able to play many, many different video streams/formats without installing any extras.

Some things to check:
  • Is your streamer port forwarded in your router (assuming you are trying to access it from outside your network)?
  • Is you streamer port open on the host machines local firewall?
  • Can you access a steam on the host machine (this helps to determine if it is a network or host PC issue)?
  • What format are your videos nativley recorded in? VLC can not currently transcode/stream the dvr-ms format.
  • HAve you tried using VLC rather than Windows Media player?

hi UJB - thanks for your reply - i did some testing and answered your questions below
  • at the moment im just trying to stream internally
  • firewall was disabled during testing
  • mpg files (stream ok on both machines) - xvid files (dont stream at all - i get a message - Unable to open 'http://localhost:444') (using port 443 for the ewa so i can get to it from work)
  • yes im using vlc - as this allows me to watch in progress recordings if need be remotely.

maybe vlc just doesnt do xvid ? if it cant do dvr-ms then im guessing that could be it.

Played around with an Xvid clip on my setup......I get the unable to open message.....but if I wait about 30 seconds and click the play button again it starts.....but it is choppy and pixalated (using my settings above).

This makes me belive that there is a huge amount of overhead in transcoding from the Xvid format to the selected transcode format (H264 in my case).

So...it appears this is just an transcode isue inherent to VLC when the source is xVid encoded.....
