Unfortunately after all of the good reports on the update I am going to have to submit a bad one. While GBPVR still sits at a pleasant 5% cpu average while watching live TV, the new PVRX2 consumes a horrendous 55% average cpu with spikes over 60%. A small increase in cpu usage I can deal with, but at an 11x increase, all I can say is yikes!

I haven't been able change anything in the config that clearly lowers the cpu usage much less get it close to the GBPVR usage levels. Are others experiencing this? Is it my config? Is it just the way that PVRX2 is always going to be? Can I think of another question just so I can use the question mark key again? :p

Anyhow, I would appreciate insight into this. If my config, logs, and machine specs are needed just let me know where to post them and in what format. Thanks for any response. I really hope this is just a fluke.

I do see a small increase in cpu activity but not enough for me to worry about in XP. In Vista, I see no increase whatsoever and in fact, I find PVRX2 runs silky smooth in Vista.

You're not using a second monitor in a dual monitor setup?

The CPU should be the same as GB-PVR, assuming you've got GB-PVR set to use the VMR9 Custom or VMR9 FSE renderers. I'm guessing you're using Overlay or one of the regular VMR renderers?

What CPU and video card do you have? I get about 10% CPU while watching video.

I am running with an AMD FX-60 (dual core) and two NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX cards. While working, I usually am not in SLI mode, thus I run the TV on monitor 3 or 4. My input is from a WinTV-PVR-usb2 .

Normally I use the Overlay Manager. I tried the other options, VMR9, VMR9 Full Screen Exclusive, VMR9 Custom, etc and could not get the cpu usage down.

Interestingly I cannot use the Hardware Decoder Device on the GBPVR.exe. It must be set to software decoder. One would think that would make it the cpu hog yet it doesn't. With the PVR2X2 I can use either software or the Hauppauge PVR 350 decoder. However it does not seem to make a difference.

Yeah could be something to do with that. Sorry, I dont really know - I dont have a setup like this. Definitely worth trying it in a single card setup temporarily to check it.

That setting is only for the old GBPVR.exe interface. PVRX2.exe is always using VMR9 Custom. I'm guessing you'd find VMR9 Custom would have given you similar performance in GBPVR.exe, even in previous releases.

You dont have a hardware decoder device. The WinTV PVR-USB2 has a hardware encoder.

Ok, at first when I tested the VRM9 on the GBVR.exe I didn't notice any change. However I had failed to restart the whole application. I had only restarted the TV. Once I restarted I did see the increase in the cpu usage. Still around 10% but an increase none the less.

Playing around with the PVRX2.exe I finally found that the video decoder was the kicker. By changing that I was able to bring it down to 30% - 40% cpu utilization. Still a lot higher but at least I have made a difference. So the obvious next question is, does anyone have suggestions for good video decoders?

i still use overlay manager
nvidia pure video
hardware acceleration on
in overlay manager set to vmr
basically the same setting as the old gbpvr
and all is good maybe 20% more cpu though
so from 15 to 35% usage

just my 5 cents worth
