QAM recording to WMV or MPG?

I get my HVR-1600 working with QAM recording. Nice!

But I notice recorded shows use DVR-MS format. Can we record shows directly into wmv or mpg format? Is there any reason we can't?

It would be great if I can watch recorded HD shows directly from Xbox 360 without transcoding.

These broadcasts are received in a raw MPEG2 format, and need to be saved into an MPEG2 container file. The type of MPEG2 container file you end up with depends on the mux you use for recording.

The Microsoft DVR-MS mux produces .dvr-ms files.

The TS Mux produces .ts files.

The ATI and Cyberlink muxes produce .mpg files. These muxes can sometimes be problematic for high def channels, but some people are using them successfully anyway.
