had this problem since upgrading to vista and struggling to work out how to fix..

doesn't seem to matter what mpeg2 decoder i use (and have seen it during avi playback anyway) - overlay also doesn't make a difference (EVR or VMR9)

am using latest ATI drivers and have enabled vertical synch always on (which i read somewhere) but hasn't made a difference..

anyone any ideas or experience with tearing (and fixing it!)..

thanks

pc spec :
amd x2 3800 cpu, asus M2NPV-VM m/b, asus X1650 vga (dvi to LCD tv), pvr 150MCE & hvr 1300, gbpvr 1.1.5

here's image showing tearing on harmisons face (have seen much worse, but intermittent...)

Have you tried VMR9 FSE mode? Changing to that is the only thing that fixed it for me 100% although that was on an nvidia card (2 in fact, first a 6150, then a 8500gt).

thanks for advice, will give it extended test. as intermittent, hard to troubleshoot and see what fixes.

reason i didn't think was GBPVR was that i also got tearing in windows media player.

I can't remember whether WMP uses overlay or VMR9 but it definitely doesn't use FSE, so yes you're likely to suffer the same symptoms in both it and GB-PVR.

If the FSE doesn't fix it, right click on the ATI CCC icon on the taskbar and select 3D settings->Hi quality (something like that -- don't remember the exact wording). I have X1650 also and saw some tearing when it was set to high performance (as opposed to high quality).
AMD Athlon64 2800+
1GB DDR and 2x 160GB SATA HDD
ATI Radeon X1650Pro AGP 8x 512MB DDR
1x OnAir HD, 2x HVR1600, 1x PVR-150
Cox Analog Cable and OTA ATSC
Windows XP SP3
GBPVR (>= 1.3.7)

See if there is a setting for 'vertical sync' in your graphics card settings and enable it. VMR9 FSE should fix it too, but with a nice beefy PC like yours you shouldn't have to do that.

just to be sure, run dxdiag and go into the Display tab and make sure the hardware accelerations are enabled.. and that hardware acceleration is turned on in the graphics properties, etc...

many thanks for all your input - i've set overlay back to EVR and changed ATI settings to high quality then setting the vertical synch on (which was on before)...

if not - VMR9 FSE did seem to fix it, but i have gone for days without seeing the tearing - is only now and again, but frequent when it's happening (if you know what i mean..)

i hope this fixes it!
cheers

Glad to hear you got it working!

p.s. if Harmison was enough to cause tearing, just imagine what Shoaib Akhtar running in or a Muralitharan doosra would do.... :p

Depending on where on the screen the tear is, it can make it look like they have a bent arm...
