Hi, I recently got a spanish-language dvd and want to back it up on my HD--but with english subtitles.

I've searched this forum and the outside web...but have become hopelessly confused as to what I need to do to accomplish this.

Eventually I want to be able to play this subtitled-video on my MVP.

Would someone know of a good step-by-step process for getting the subtitles.

FYI: the steps I typically take to back up my dvds are:
1. Use DVD Decrypter (IFO mode) to rip the .vob file(s) (I normally don't worry with menus, etc.--just the main movie or show)
2. Then run ZProcess to transcode the file into a mpg file that can run on my MVP.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

This suggestion is a bit out there but the new update I did to mvpmc using sub's alternate http interface provides mvpmc file handling including dvd subtitles, with the GBPVR interface so you can select alternate audio video and subtitle streams when you hit the menu key. You can try and see what's there by renaming your vob to mpg.

I think you can use subrip to create the srt files from the vobs. It uses OCR to examine the bitmaps to determine the characters.

Martin thanks for the suggestion of the mvpmc dongle. I'm going to fool around with that; I'm impressed with what I've read about your work.

Pastro: what do I do AFTER I get the srt files using subrip? Actually, I used subrip and got .idx and .sub files. What do I do after that? Thanks.

Well if you have the srt files (which I think you can get via subrip) then just turn on the srtviewer in config and they will show up on the MVP. You toggle them on and off with the yellow button (ctrl y).

If you can't get srt files from subrip, you should be able to convert with subtool.

you can rip the dvd AND code the subtitles onto the video with mencoder...Smile
this will permanently overlay the subs on top of the video so no turning them off...but it works...
i use:
Quote:K:\mpg\dvdmake\Mencoder.exe -cache 8192 -alang en -slang en -vf filmdint, softskip -ofps 24000/1001 -fps 30000/1001 -dvd-device h: dvd://1 -priority normal -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts qscale=4:ildct:vmax_b_frames=2:acodec=mp2:abitrate=192:autoaspect:keyint=15 -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd:telecine -idx -o "outfile.mpg" -af volume=16
of course adjust drive letters etc[bold] for your system..
setup for ntsc dvd rip,24fps...[film]
-alang is for audio language, -slang is for sub language..
[guessing you want -slang en only, audio=defualt audio lang.]
