Instead of a IR control has anyone tried direct Serial Control of a Direct TV box?

I recently posted instructions in the developer forum on how to set up WinLIRC as an IR blaster. You can make the blaster yourself for a few dollars - its just a resistor and an IR led hooked up to a serial port. I have mine working very reliably with 50 ft of wire to my 2nd satellite box upstairs.

The downside - it can be very tricky figuring out the IR codeset you need to control your tuner. Hopefully somebody has already done it for you and posted it on the web someplace...
