Hmmm... is the application supposed to use that much memory when idle, i.e. only the menu running ?

Update: I disabled Xrecord-plugin, and now it's using 45mb.. quite a difference there yeah...

But, and a big but this...
I see that the app doesn't return used memory..
So, from start gbpvr uses around 45 mb, and after browsing the menus a couple of times the usage is up at 70 mb and raising...

Not a grave problem, i have 512mb ram available, but still...

Each plugin/screen caches any images it needs, so it can soon add up. This typically includes the (large) background images, a bitmap which is used to draw the screen, and any images which are added to the screen. As you visit each screen for the first time, it'll allocate the resources it needs.

I'm personally happy with GB-PVR using about 80MB of RAM. Memory is cheap these days, and caching these sorts of resources in memory helps make the programming easier, and helps make the response times quicker.

You've got 512MB of RAM which is plenty.

Ack!!!!! You said the one thing that drives me nuts about modern day programmers. "Memory is Cheap". Sure relatively speaking it is cheap, but as more and more people design programs with loading everything in memory, it requires more and more resources. There are many, many ways to design programs so that they are memory efficient and also quick. I'm not saying GBPVR isn't designed well, but statements like "Memory is Cheap" just drive me nuts as a programmer.

Okay, I'm off my soap box now. I'll go back to making utilities and web stuff for GBPVR. [Image: smile.gif]

Ah get over it. I made a conscious decision about what things I wanted to cache, and how much memory was OK to use. I concider a fairly standard machine to have about 256-512 mb of RAM, and consider GB-PVR using 80MB to be quite reasonable (given its written in .net, does alot of video processing, and has a lot of very graphical elements). Plugin developers are free to manage the memory anyway they seem fit.

Don't worry about it, just venting some of my long term design frustration with today's architecture and frameworks.

Nothing I say or do will change it so I have learned to live with it. There are advantages and disadvantages to going to an Object oriented architecture, and one disadvantge from my stand point is the memory requirements these apps now take.

I think you have done an excellent job in the memory usage area. I only run my HTPC with 256 of memory, and everything runs fine.

Oh deary me! It was not my intention to yell: "-bohoo, badly written code, shame!"

I'm very happy with gbpvr, i just wondered what was considered a normal memory-usage...

My 512mb is way beoynd enough as it is.. it just freaked me out a little when a looked a the memorybar raising... and raising...

Ach, as long as it works i'm pleased [Image: smile.gif]

Any way to disable this caching so I can see how it affects performance, etc? Would using a different skin, or reducing the number of colors in the images make any difference? I know I should be on 1 GB really (I'm on 512MB now), but the upgrade is a pain to do because of the case size and all the other components would need to come out to get at the memory, etc.

My GB-PVR tends to use about 150 meg in total by the way, once I add up the recording service, main application and system tray app. This is with only the standard live TV, recordings, TV guide and video archive. My total memory usage is often at 500 meg once you add up everything else (DVD player, SQL Server, Sphere Server, Terminal Services sessions, etc)

nope, you'll just have to get by with the way GB-PVR uses memory. For most people it hasnt been a problem. Sorry.

I agree with tipstir, you should use some sort of RAM recovery software. I'm using CachemanXP and 1GB of RAM and currently have 551MB free, and that's with alot of background software running:

GB-PVR
Kaspersky AV
Logitech SetPoint
Girder
Ultramon
Apache Webserver
System Tray "Mail Checker"
Style XP
Logitech Profiler
Bluetooth Software
Soundmax Control Panel
Netlimiter
Belkin Bulldog UPS Software
CachemanXP
Firefox Browser
& Various Windows Services
