Just to let you all know that I allowed windows update to install an update for my ATI card yesterday. It was the WHQL drivers dated Sept I think.

Afterwards, neither pvrx2 or gbpvr would start, instead displaying the message "Your systems does not support the VMR9 renderer".

I did a system restore to the auto-checkpoint that xp had taken before the update and now everything is fine. God I love that feature.

Does it do it with the driver from ATI direct? I just built a machine in January using the ATI direct drivers and everthing has been ok. Must be from Microsoft only. Oh, 9600 Pro here as well.

no idea, I am leaving well alone.

Actually I was kicking myself to accepting the update as I very much doubt that a driver update for a card this old is going to do anything positive as all the updates are going to be for the latest cards.

Others have posted before how driver updates can screw things up for nvidia and cards.

every single "hardware update" from windows update I have installed has broken my machine.

I learned a few years ago to ignore all of them.

I have noticed that some of them don't install anyway even after they download, as for example the LAN and modem drivers for my notebook. But they have never solved any problems for me either.
