The only thing I changed compared to a normal installation was turning off the swap partition.

I'm starting to come to that conclusion also.
If I can limit the standard XP writes it should last for a while.

Thanks. It was mostly out of curiousity as I don't have any spare cash for the project at the moment anyway.

As for HD - the future of UK HD (at least the free OTA HD) has basically gone sideways. Most free digital here is 576i and will probably stay that way (maybe some 720p in the future).

I hadn't come across this form-factor but I'll keep an eye on it for future developments (and price drops).

Cheers,
Brian

get the hard drive in a cf card type and you'll never have to worry about writes!
i have a tiny 8gig cf that's actually a hard drive inside it, it works just like a hard drive, and no write problems like memory types..and fast too!
i've been using it as a portable hard drive for diag. utils for over a year now..

this way you don't have to do anything weird, just format, install windows and you're good to go..[use a cf-ide adapter obviously]
but make sure it's a hard drive type..some big ones aren't..
[you can hear it spin and it's heavier]
