There's probably more that I'm missing.
Over at the mp3car forums, they steal a .dll from the windows embedded kit that pretty much doesn't let any writing go to the card until shutdown or hibernate time. However, IMHO i think that's overkill. I think with just doing a few things it will be well enough.

sorry i cant see the point
everything i read about doing says there isnt even a great power saving
so noise is the only other thing
a 2.5" hard drive 2m away you can hear anyway
but let us know how you get on im interested
