Hi all,

Just a query really. Is there a way to automatically reduce the size of mpegs generated from the satellite stream of freeview here in NZ?

I use a Hauppagauge Nova-s card and record from the optus satellite, but my recordings are a bit large i.e. a recording of Bridget Jones including ads was over 6.4gb. even with ads removed this won't fit on a DVD. I am using a workaround to burn to DVD but wondered if there are any solutions that can solve this at the recording stage or auto transcoding (if thats quicker than my current solution) See here http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...49&page=21

Many thanks

Auto transcoding might work - but unless you set things up as a season-type recording, it's an all-or-nothing approach.

You would have to set up a new FFMPEG command line in the config.xml, and do some reading as to what the command line options are (or hopefully someone on the forum will help out)
You just have to reduce the bit-rate, while keeping it as MPEG2 so you can chuck it straight on a DVD and not have re-encode a DIVX or similar.

Maybe you can also set a target size with the ffmpeg comandlines - so you don't have to guess the bitrate - just say you want it to be 4500MB or something like that.

When setting a season recording, you can specify what transcoding profile to use. Someone else might be able to answer about when these are run (ie straight after recording, or at the specified time, like all at 3am - 8am)

Thanks JonnyCam,

sounds a bit of a mission just to get the occassional prog or film on DVD i think its great that the quality is improved with digital T.V. but 3+gb per hour is just too large for DVD. I think the BurnDVDx2 plugin is going to give me what i need.

I suppose HD and blue ray is the future though so better think about upgrading as DVD's an't goning to cut it for HD broadcasts either ;- )
