This is a bizarre one.

I missed the first episode of a short series and a neighbour lent me it on tape. I want to get the tape back to him ASAP so I hooked my VCR up to my PVR350 using a UHF cable, configured an extra channel in GB-PVR called 'Video' set to the VCR's broadcast channel and then set a Manual recording going and pressed play on the VCR. All simple so far.

The MPEG file looks about the right size (1.8GB for just over an hour at Medium record quality). When I play it, however, it has no sound only the pictures. Visually it is complete from start to finish but at no point is there any sound at all, nothing, not even hiss or crackles. I've even tried copying the MPG file to my other PC and playing it with Windows Media Player - same thing.

Any ideas how this could happen with a UHF connection???

I dont know why you ended up with no sound, but just a comment - if you want to record from a tape to MPG file, you're probably better off just using WinTV2000 for this task. Its easier than try to schedule a recording etc.

Definitely an odd one! I used pvastrumento to analyse the capture and it looks OK - it tells me the audio component is 48KHz at 224kbps and is the same length as the video component but I suppose it would say that even if the audio track consists of silence.

My only guess at this point is that the PVR350 'glitched' and stopped including the audio component - or doesn't it work like that?

On the WinTV2K issue - the only other time I've done a tape to PC transfer I did use it and it is a bit easier but that was on my first PC which I originally had the 350 in. I don't want to install it on the media server if I can help it and my first PC has my Nova-t in it now which obviously wont work.

No matter - I'm trying another run with GB-PVR and if that doesn't work I'll keep the tape tonight and watch it on the VCR.

Cheers,
Brian

Just to say the second recording attempt worked with sound. Curious! Oh well.
