I was trying to use Tim Moore's firestb to set up channel changing on my Motorola DCT6200.

I understand that MCE is needed to RECORD via firewire, but the instructions seemed to imply that channel changing would work w/o MCE.

However, the installer (firestb.msi) quits right at the beginning saying that MCE 2005 is required.

Has anyone setup channel changing w/ non-MCE XP?

Try installing only the command line apps and the firewire drivers. (Uncheck first and second options.)

The installer doesn't even make it that far - message comes up immediately.

I found at the bottom of the change log that a check was added in, but gave some command line parameters to pass to the installer that bypasses this check. I tried that & got it to install.

Now the problem I'm finding is how to get channel.exe visible everywhere. Is there anything eqivalent to the UNIX environment variable $PATH in XP so that I don't have to past "C:\Program Files\Timmoore\MCE 2005 STB\channel.exe" into gbpvr's command line?

Right click "My Computer" and select "Properties".
(If Vista) Click "Advanced System settings" on the left.
Select "Advanced" tab.
Click "Environment Variables".
Modify the "User Variables" path for that user only or the "System Variables" path for all users.

Entries are separated by a semicolon.

Still having problems.

I ended up copying channel.exe to system32 & that worked. I can execute the channel command from any directory & it changes the channel on my STB.

However, I added "channel -v 2 {channel}" to the command line entry when specifying the channel change method, but it doesn't go through when I specify a recording w/ gbpvr.

UPDATE: OK - I'm blind. I stared at the .exe plugin settings screen forever before I realized I was entering the entire command in the Parameters line rather than browsing to the executable & then just specifying the parameters. doh!

Thanks for your help whurlston :o

For future reference toward the bottom of the page there is this little bit of info.

Quote:How to I install on a non-MCE machine?
The package by default checks for MCE 2005. However, the drivers and command line utilities are useful on non-MCE machines, to install on a non-MCE machine run the following command:

MSIEXEC /i firestb.msi IDENT=0

Also you may have a look at http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...re+capture if you want to capture from firewire using GBPVR
