Fresh Install - Multiple Issues

Vista 64 w/SP1
GBPVR 10213

New to GBPVR, but here are some issues I am running into. Vista 64 is a fresh install, fully patched.

1) Cannot browse to "Settings" screen as it will immediately recall back to main menu. Checking the logs complains about no "skin" dir so for I manually create it (Skin2 does exist already). This allows me to browse the settings screen.

The community skin package apparently creates the skin directory for you. On my first GBPVR install I experienced this issue. On my second, I installed the community skin and did not. On my third, I did and attributed this issue to no skin dir. In other words, those with Community skin will work ok and those without, won't - at least for fresh installs.

2) Settings aren't used. What ever changes I make in the config app are not reflected in PVRX2. Changes to the video renderer, media directories, etc remain as their defaults values (C:\) in PVRX2. Live TV and the Guide do not work either. However, changes made inside PVRX2 itself seem to take.

Eg: Set the Skin to community in Config will still use the default blue skin, but setting the Skin within PVRX2 will work correctly and retain the settings upon next run. Changing the Video decoder in Config will not change the value in PVRX2 itself, etc.

config.xml seems to be correct though, reflecting changes made.

In my first test install, I didn't have this issue as I was able to successfully change my Videos/Pictures dirs and watch Live TV/ use Guide. The only differences I can think of are:

- a newer gbpvr*.msi: I d/l it 1-2 days ago without this issue and today with. Perhaps two different minor versions?
- Hauppauge 1800 drivers with 4GB ram issue: 1st test install had the beta drivers and no settings issue, 2nd and 3rd test installs are using the default Vista drivers.
- Avast anti-virus: Not installed for 1st, installed for 2nd and 3rd.

(more specs if needed)

Regarding my issue #2, it seems that launching PVRX2 from a desktop shortcut or from the start menu icon is when the behavior I described happens. Right-clicking on the tray icon and starting PVRX2 from there works fine as settings are properly reflected.

This is discussed in lots of other threads. Its a bug in 1.2.13. As you've already found, the work around is to create a 'skin' directory. It doesnt have to have any files in it.

I suspect this relates to Vista and its virtualstore file protection getting in the way (ie, its not updating the real config.xml but a copy). You'll probably find this extra copy in the hidden "c:\users\<your account>\appdata\local\virtualstore\program files\devnz\gbpvr" directory. Try deleting this directory, then only run the app as administrator, or change the permissions on config.xml to allow any user to have full access to the file.

No, its the same version as its been for the last couple of months.

Yes, this. The virtualstore file is the default/unchanged config file with the program files\devnz\gbpvr\config reflecting my changes. As described in my previous post, how PVRX2 is launched will determine which is used. 'Run as Admin' works also.

Thank you for the help.

Deleting the virtual store copy and updating permissions to allow anyone to write to config.xml will fix it.

A default install does try to set these permissions on this file for compatibility with vista, and it usually works fine, but very occassionally something goes wrong.
