Preface:
I have used ATI All in Wonders since , well since cave man times :-) i just use them to "put TV on the computer" i am working on , NOT to "turn the computer INTO a tv" which IMO is a big difference.
so the TV just sits up on the corner of the screen and makes noise , whil'st i work and surf and so on.
It's the video card, it's the tuner, it's BOTH in one thing, which assumes that it has less data to transfer across the buss, less cpu need , and more efficient use of the GPU, that is the assumption anyway.
ATI dumped the "Media" line, and all hopes of getting "Digitally compressed noise" on my computer were dashed.
when lo-and-behold Diamond put out a "HDTV" All In Wonder out that has a kick butt GPU , Fast memory and (the cool part) a TV with a Hybrid analog/ digital tuner in it.
Of course it also has that nasty Catalyst media center junk hard to install software, and its usual poor programming, and it's so bad what they have done, but the TOP reason why i need a way around the Catalyst media center junk is:
It wont do QAM DIGITAL without VISTA, ASTC over the air fine, just not cable. :-( dang and i just bought another licence for XP for my other computer too .
So i find the "Best PVR program that you can get" (according to many people that is GBPVR) and it looks like a really well thought out, well designed, hunk of software.
INSTALATION:
the instalation went fine, of this NEW version of it, My exact card the Diamond HDTV All In Wonder Premium, is not directally supported, but the drivers they toss into ATI stuff are often "One Size Fits All" and sure enough the 650, or the Ati Wonder Elite configurations both readily adapted to my new nightmare.
What i COULD do, with a DIamond All In Wonder (hdtv)
I was able to get it set up as an analog source, found a way to shove a EPG in, and had it going in short time, the implementation of the guide at least blows the ati media centers implementation away.
It will run in VMR 7 VMR 9 , and Ovelay (the one i really want)
AND
i get only 3% cpu consumption on a Intel Core 2 6600 chip, when recording.
COOOL (Way less than catlyst media), and i still get ATI cleanup , de-interlace , edge sharpening, and temporal filtering, all occuring nicely.
SO
i got me a great 69 channel, digitally cleaned up, analog bunch of channels and a descent pic on the wide screen monitor.
What i CANT do:
Every time i try to get it to lock up or scan or initiate a Digital channel, even the first scan of digital via configuring it for a 650 , BOOM! out goes the lights, the computer completly crashes .
What i am doing
i am of course still reading the entire web page here :-) forum , guides, Pages and Pages of stuff, weeding through everything, but not comming up with any answers, so i registered, and Here i am.
i can get logs or something if that is important:
i reiterate, analog works wonderfully, the first touch of digital (QAM) scanning, and it croaks.
Notes: Diamond put QAM all over the box, it's all in thier adds everywhere, but they sorta didnt indicate well ,that it won't work in QAM without Vista :-(
Well i dont really want vista, unless hell was freezing over or something :-)
besides isnt it just a frequency issue? the card DOES do over the air Digial ASTC just fine.
(added) further testing of ASTC (i dont have antenna because i got hills on both sides so no reception) in GBPVR, and even its "digital" scan and BOOM! again, the whole computer bails out.
Thank you for your support.

more notes: the recording can not be stopped, or the tv will not work right, so if YOU are trying to get that board to work with GBPVR then just know that stopping the (time shift) recording might not be a good idea. stopping it in the systray icon, or in the config stuff, either way and the card does not work right with the software. this is no problem for me at all. but if your trying to get it to work, you will want to know that.
