http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html

how would you expect the nvidia codec to perform relative to mpv codec?
anyone know generally how the codecs you pay for compare to the free codecs?
thanks for any info.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/nvid...ecoder.htm

found this gets you a 30 day demo of the codec.
so you can try before you buy.

Has anyone actually compared them?

I have been using GBPVR for for about three years.. When I started I tried lots of decoders and finally settled on Purevideo. Note that I use Nvidia graphic cards.

You can get a thirty day trial of Purevideo from the link that you posted (quoted above). My advice would be try before you buy !!

Good Luck

pure video -good but starting getting deinterlacing wrong on digital recordings
mpv-i found to soft (blurry)
ffdshow it would match purevideo and maybe in some cases be better i had lip sync issues (have to choose the correct decoder ive been told since)
powerdvd8 it just works for video in my case
but every machine is different so try them all what works well on one may not work well with the next also drivers can have big affects on what results you get and the list goes on

I had an interesting situation. When I first tried nvidia codec, I would hear audio but no video. I installed a whole lot of stuff. Any way installing ccccp codec
http://www.cccp-project.net/
pack gave me a warning saying gabest spliiter, mpv, mpa codec known problem remove!! etc... 3 different codecs.
http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer/formats/mpeg2.shtml ( think the splitter stopped it from working)

So I removed, they actually (deregister them in sys32) and it installed mpc or something. Anyway, after this nvidia codec worked!
But their mpc codec was glitchy awful, just terrible, so I reregistered mpv and mpa and not the mpeg splitter. nvidia codec still works as well as mpv and mpa.
I also installed hdtvpump codec with no troubles so far.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/HDTV...Filter.htm, not sure what it does.

So far nvidia codec appears sharper definition and no glitches on a fast p4 2.8ghz 800fsb pc 1gb memmory with a radeon 9600 64mb video card.

on a slower p4 2.4ghz 533 fsb 1 gb memmory with a radeon x1300 256mb video card, gbpvr no matter what codec has a momentary glitch, a few milliseconds every 3 or 4 seconds, where the video halts and then starts up again. It is noticeable.

Another program watchHDTV does not glitch but for some reason nvidia codec does not work on that program.

I assume the glitch is due to the machine not being powerful enough for the gbpvr program to run flawlessly.

Also what is a good mpeg2 splitter? what does it do, and which one do I have?

also those ffdshow codecs never work for me at all. just a black screen. It has a nice configuration setup screen and all, but what is the point if they dont work?

I just tried the PureVideo codec on my machine and it didn't perform any better than mpv, in fact on the CNN ticker it was slightly worse.

I just tried the trial of PurVideo and don't plan on buying it. Gotta like try before you buy! Smile

What video card are you using ... I ask because I can feel a week of trying everything in sight ...

Thanks

I'm using an Asus m2npv-vm motherboard with built in GeForce 6150.

I would put the mpv decoder at the top of the list.

Good luck!

FSE mode made the biggest difference to my decoding. Just make sure you have vertical sync set to always on in your graphics cards settings.
