Power on external tuner to start recording

I can not figure out if there is a way to power on an external tuner via a serial cable before recording. I have GBPVR setup to use girder to change channels like a champ. Girder uses a serial command to send channel info to my Directv receiver. Now I would like to power on the receiver before recording and turn it off when finished. Is there a built in command to do this? Is there a different way to do this altogether? Thanks for any info or suggestions.

Its something you'd have to do on the girder side. It's also very dependant on the type of set top box you're using.
