I have just spoken with an engineer at WHYY TV, in Philadelphia. It turns out this really isn't Sub's problem. I was informed that, due to the impending transition, the formats are in chaos. He described multiple reformats of networked transmissions that can be severely "postage stamped." And this affects appliance televisions as well. He mentioned the AFD flag, (automatic format descriptor), for which the station has equipment on order, but is not yet broadcasting.
He suggested that the problems should go away after 2/18/09, or they would be very unhappy Wink
From my POV, it might be useful to have an optional black-border detector that could correct the display, but I understand Sub is already up to his ears, and I thank him for what he has done.

Since you're using VMR9, you can add a new AspectRatioMode to your config.xml with negative numbers that will zoom the whole thing, cropping out the black areas.

Something like:

<AspectRatioMode name="LetterBoxZoom" ratio="-0.15,-0.15,1.15,1.15" />

Note, I'm not saying those numbers will be exactly what you need, but that will move things in the right direction. That combination of numbers does a linear 15% zoom (or maybe it's 30%, 15% each way?).

How would I activate this ratio from the player?

Unfortunately this sort of thing isnt really possible if you want to be able to use hardware accelerated decoding, which means most people couldnt use this type of feature.
