I am looking for a DVB-C device, preferrably USB or PCI-Express. The cable provider doesnt use any encryption so far. I am having trouble finding one for my needs.

I have looked at Hauppauge's site but they have devices for DVB-T mostly and I couldnt find any in USB. I have also looked at FloppyDTV but it has some strange claims on its website like a single card will fit in a PCI or PCI-Express slot and that it will fit in a floppy bay. Very strange.

I am also very confused by all the DVB-x standards. Will a DVB-S device work in my case? How about a DVB-T? :confused:

DVB=Digital Video Broadcasting.

DVB-S is satellite, T=terrestial, C=cable. Just google and Im sure you will find plenty of information. I can't recommend a C card, but I use the external S from Digital Everywhere and am very happy with it.

Hauppauge does have a USB DVB-C stick, but its very new and I havnt tested it with GB-PVR yet.

Thanks for the info. I have already googled it and that how I found FloppyDTV from Digital Everywhere. Btw, I have read the FloppyDTV spec in more detail and have found that it is not a pci/pci-express card but a card-shaped device that connects to the pc via firewire. Hence the strange claims on its website about it fitting in pci or pci-express slot or in a 3.5" floppy bay. It is only DVB-C and supports software decoding of MPEG2 and MPEG4 / H.264. Will this be a problem as far as performance/picture quality is concerned?

I cant find any info in english on the hvr930c. Its in german and I dont speak that language. I guess its so new that it hasnt made it to the UK site yet. From this link http://www.hauppauge.com/site/press/pres..._1244..jpg, it seems to do 3 things: DVB-T, DVB-C and Analog cable. The HVR930C seems to have software MPEG2. Is this a problem with GBPVR?

In general, should I look for a hardware mpeg card for DVB-C like in the case for analog cards? Also, does this mean DVB-S/DVB-T will not work with DVB-C signal?

Thanks.

I have FireDTV, Twinhan and TechnoTrend DVB-C devices. I havnt tried a FloppyDTV though, so cant vouch for it.

The lack of hardware encoder only relates to analog, and makes it practically useless for analog, but this device should be fine for DVB-T or DVB-C for GB-PVR. With DVB the signal is encoded by the broadcaster prior to transmission (so no need to encode it during recording). I dont know of any DVB-C devices with analog and hardware encoder.

I have one of these 930C devices, but other than a quick check I havnt experimented with it much.

No, DVB-S or DVB-T devices will not work with DVB-C signals. Only a DVB-C device will receive DVB-C signals.
