Hi Guys,

My son lives out in the country and doesn't have satellite, just ota through a digital convertor box.

He has a lap top that's not used much so I loaded GBPVR on it and now he can hookup to my network when he's here and copy programs over from my temp directory to his machine and then take it home and hook it up to the TV and watch it through the Videos plugin (his laptop has an SVHS output for the TV, in fact it can do dual monitors between the LCD and TV!).

This works fine, but you know we're kinda greedy . . . we'd like it to work better. Is there a way I could get the programs into his Recordings Directory and bring the program descriptions with it? He may not want every program I have, but I figured he could just copy what he wanted. I'm guessing the program info is in a database file somewhere he'd need to grab? And I'm guessing/hoping that if there are programs in that database for which there aren't any programs for in the directory that it'll just drop those off?

Clear as mud, huh? Hopefully you guys can understand what we're doing and what we would like for it to be able to do and can point us in the right direction!

So far it's working pretty good!

Thanks!

Steve

I think you can copy it over into a similar directory structure then go into the config of the "client" and import recordingsdump.xml (which you can create or get from you gbpvr directory) from the "server." If drive letters and simple things like that change then you can do a simple search and replace to make them valid.

Steve,

What kind of Internet connection does your son have? You can't use EWA?

He doesn't have internet at his place. His lap top has a wireless card in it so when he's here he can log onto my htpc, but that's it.

The way I would do it is....

On your server machine do an export recording from config.

copy recording-dump.xml to the laptop.

If his recordings directory is different to yours then you have to edit the dump file to change the drive/base directory to what it is on the laptop (text editor and change all works well).

Import this file on the laptop with config.

If the laptop config hasn't been tweaked then gbpvr will remove entries in the database for those video files it can't find on disk.

That should be it.

Thanks! We'll play with it next time he's over.

A couple more questions . . . what does the export do? The thing is that I don't really want to have run config on the htpc every time as it's nice and tucked away in the entertainment center and I don't want to have to drag the monitor out and hookup the keyboard, mouse, etc.. It'd be nice if he could just hop on to the htpc through the network and grab what he needs without us having to do anything physically on the htpc.

TTYL,

Steve

The recordings are automatically exported to recordings-dump.xml each night with the EPG update, so you dont really need to run the Config app (unless you need to be sure you have the absolute latest list)

Would it create the recordings dump if we did an epg update from the system screen within GBPVR?
