Anyone want to take a stab at figuring out why my screen went black when I hit pause on a HD channel?

This was with a fresh install of the latest version GBPVR. I left everything in config at it's default setting except I changed video renderer to EVR, set full screen mode, and set up my tuners/EPG. All codecs are set at system default.

Here is the long version if anyone is interested:
After installing and configuring I fired up PVRX2 and did a little SD channel surfing including pausing, rewinding, fast forwarding. It all worked fine and looked good. The only problem was it felt a little sluggish; like a couple second delay with a black screen after hitting pause. Then I changed to a HD channel, and the whole picture on the screen looked like it was shaking up and down a few mm very quickly. hmmm. When I hit pause on the HD channel I got a blank screen/no sound. I waited for a few min w/o pushing any more buttons before I started hitting stop, exit, and play on the remote to try and get something back on the screen. Eventually I got the TV guide to show up again. From there I exited PVRX2. Hey, no crash!! Cool!!

I'd really like to get this program to work (I was unsuccessful last time I tried). Beyond TV works great so I'm sure my hardware is up to par. Any ideas?

Pretty much the only difference between Beyond TV and GB-PVR will come down to the decoders used, and possibly the video renderer. Beyond TV has the advantage of being able to ship with a set of decoders ready to use. GB-PVR has no built in decoder, instead using decoders you already have on your machine. Unfortunately nearly everyone seems to have some different decoder or a different version, which can lead to poor results for some users.

I'm fairly sure Beyond TV uses VMR9, so you may want to try that video renderer first. If you using XP, its worth noting that EVR provides no hardware acceleration on XP.

Try other decoders, instead of sticking with 'system default' which effectively tells Windows to pick some random on your machine.

By default GB-PVR uses live preview mode, which means super fast channel changing, and no buffering to disk (for reduced wear+tear, reduced heat/noise etc). If you want to hit pause, then has to stop everything and switch to timeshift mode, to start buffering to disk etc, which will take a few seconds. If you want pause to happen instantly, then you can disable live preview mode in the config app. The app will then be in timeshift mode giving instant pause but with slightly slower channel change times, plus the extra overheads buffering to disk.

I am a new user, but I am having exactly the same problem. Black screen when I hit pause on BBC HD, ITV HD or Luxtv HD. SD channels work ok.

The first time I installed GBPVR it worked perfectly. Then I downloaded the latest directx from microsoft (not sure what the old version was) and then ithis problem appeared.

I wonder if its the new directx not happy with whatever decoder it is I am using. I think the default decoder is the one from cyberlink powercinema which came with my HVR-4000 card.

am2pgs, play around with a few different video decoders. I finally got mine working well when I installed the ATI mpeg decoder. It took a while to get a codec combination that worked but it's worth it!

That's what I did, and got lucky with my first try. I decided to go with FFdshow beta 6 and selected it as the H.264 decoder in GBPVR playback config. That fixed my problem.

It is still pretty slow though from when I hit the pause button to when the picture reapears (about 15-20 seconds).
