A final bit of added info, in case anyone else ever reads this thread looking for help:

I mentioned in previous posts that I wasn't sure whether the channel mapping/scanning part of config obeys the decoder selected on the playback tab. In another thread sub said this:

This part of the app does not honour the decoder selection on the playback tab. Instead it just lets Directshow choose. Maybe use the Microsoft DECCHECK utility to check which is the default decoder on your machine.

So there it is... case closed.
