I know there was a need for digital adaptors to change an incoming comcast signal to analog. I bought a few of these government devices....I no longer use them unless I have a TV (analog) in the garage and need to pick up the local digital signals....

Now, ALL of my TV's are digital HDTVs and all of them have the COMCAST digital convertor on them that is stuck to watching one channel (3) and my HDTV stays on channel 3 while I go through the channels with my comcast remote. Is this not the way that everyone does it?????

I know I can run the cable right into my TV but the channels are then messed up numbers. My former channel 10 is now 26.2 or something like that....but clearly digital and better quality right?

Here is my problem, my son who has a digital tv too wants a box for his girls room...and wants me to order one from comcast and pay $2.00. Should I do this or is there something else I can do.....

Also, on my TV's what do I do....do I need to buy a QAM tuner?

Tks in adv.

Most HDTVs have a QAM tuner built in. As you've noticed with one of them you may be required to learn the new channel scheme of channel # + pid, such as 26.2 in your example.

Some TVs support reading the cable companies channel guide data that is also transmitted, mapping the cable company's digital channel number to the #+pid format. If your TV does this you can use the same channel numbers you're already familiar with and the same numbers a cable box user knows, as the TV handles mapping the tuned channel # to the new #+pid format. If you have to use the channel #+pid format, you can probably find a printable channel mapping guide on the company's website.

Those little boxes are convenient for analog TVs but usually don't support HD so using it on an HDTV set means you're watching a picture at much lower resolution.
