i did not set the ac3 audio decoder to FFDshow.
But, as somone else listed in another post, i did go into the ac3 audio decoder config |system tab | and changed the option to use "use other decoder." This solved the problem. I don't know how or why but this worked.
Now I am getting 5.1 audio out of my .ts files.
Now my kids can watch Barney in hi-def.
