ahh i was afraid that was the problem (hence the 1800 on order) so in this case this card is only good for live tv and digital? im assuming that since there is a 950Q that this card doesnt get digital that is provided over the cable and will only get digital from an antenna?

The digital side is good for anything GB-PVR does, ie live tv, recordings etc. The analog side is officially unsupported for anything. You might get lucky and get it working with SoftMCE, which would make it work for live tv and recordings.

The 950Q can get ATSC over antenna, or unencrypted digital cable channels.

That is the idea - the regular 950 only does broadcast digital(commonly called ATSC, though that's something of a misnomer since cable-QAM is just as much ATSC as broadcast is), while the 950Q does QAM as well. They actually use different chips and have different filter names: ironically the original 950 is called an HVR-980 by the driver, while the later 950Q is actually called an HVR-950... go figure. The non-qam 950 has been replaced by the very similar HVR-850.

the HVR-950 analog IS in the stock Direct.ini, so somebody you trust must have gotten it working ok.

haha thats kinda why i was confused by this not working. so i know this is alittle off topic but what is a good and cheap hardware encoded card? i guess as of right now all i get is cable and qam. i have an mce remote with usb reciever (from a friend who never uses mce as a media center) and i have this hvr-950 and an ATI hdtv wonder. i have pci slots available.

I thought you had an HVR-1800 on order? that has a hardware encoder for analog. other choices that also do digital are the HVR-1600 (PCI) and HVR-1950 (USB). there are various analog-only cards like the PVR-150/250/350/500 series that have hardware encoders, but you won't find those for sale new any more due to the digital switchover.

if I were you though, I'd start by installing SoftMCE. With a dual-core CPU, you should have enough CPU power to run the encoding in software.
