I am receiving TV channels (from Thailand) that from my location are only available as Internet streams... eg. see SiamTV.info

their are quality problems with the streams, sporadically some are blocked by the Thai government and the Internet bandwidth and connections in Thailand are problematic, however mostly I can receive them reasonably

windows media player and vlc both seem to be able to decode and display the channels

but I want to record, timeshift and use PVR capabilities

so, I have installed and tried to use GBPVR and UBU (configured, reinstalled, fiddled, etc, etc)... I can receive channels using UBU and via GBPVR but I cannot get recording and playback operating

my first question is:
what software products and combinations should I be trying to use?
I will rank proposed solutions on cost and elegance.

secondly: can someone help me with documentation/examples of the parameters that can be used on the GBPVR External Recorder configuration page?

somehow I am unable to understand the logic and resolve the apparent contradictions between the documentation and the list of parameters that can be used on the GBPVR External Recorder configuration page. eg. should I enter and actual number or the string "channel" (with or without {} or <> around them. when I enter an explicit number (eg. 00) the number appears to refer to the channel listed in the EPG rather than the "channel number to record on" as claimed on the actual configuration page. If its the source channel then do I need to setup a different External Record definition for every channel?

will appreciate anyone that can assist either with alternate approaches or detailed configuration help.

Is it possible that those tv shows are stored anywhere and available to download ? If you could find a site that has them stored, they might have an RSS feed set up. Then you could use an RSS reader for video (vodcasting) like Miro or Juice (there's others too), which could automatically download the latest shows to your hd .

thanks for the suggestion... but I havent been able to find any recordings.

In any case we want to watch basically in real time and only want to record in particular circumstances or when we missed a news item or speech

(mostly we are watching the protest stations where anything can happen anytime.... there is very little scheduled programming)

so, it appears only live feeds are available and thats what we want to watch anyway

your best bet is using the graph recorder and setting up a graph that takes your internet stream, compresses it to mpeg2, and makes it available to GBPVR just as a mpeg2 capture card would.. it's a bit funky but it does work, but you have to install some sort of mpeg2 encoder directshow filters which are not so easily found.
