Okay, I'm delighted to have everything working properly now. However, I have one remaining question. How do I tell GBPVR what quality profile I want to use for a particular recording? I see that the profiles themselves are set up in the configuration utility, but I can't find a place to say "Use THIS one for this recording." Can somebody help me please. (I know I'm going to feel like an idiot once this is answered, because it was staring me in the face all along, but I'll live with that. It won't be the first time.)

Quality only applies to analog recordings, so if you are recording a digital signal, don't worry about this. If you are really recording an analog signal, it's on the main screen when you choose Record. (It's been so long since I've used it, you'll have to wait for someone else to give more detailed instructions on where to find it, if you need them)

I'm not at a machine with GBPVR on it or I'd send some screen shots but maybe the manual will help you.
Basically, when you on in the Guide listings and you choose the program to record, a new screen pops up. When you click on the Record tab, you have some choices such as Record Once and some Season recording choices. You should see the quality choices on that page.

Thank you very much, gentlemen. Yes, I really do record analog because I don't know how to do the digital thing. I have a digital signal into my STB (Verizon FIOS Motorola QIP 2500-3), but I'm pretty sure all the output is analog. If somebody knows otherwise, and could instruct me on the proper cabling and configuration of my Hauppauge HVR-2250 card to accomplish digital recording, I would be quite grateful for that information also.

Whoa, I'm not a gentleman.:p
It's a little more complicated setting it up but sooner or later, you'll definitely want to got the digital route. I might suggest for you now, that you get familiar with GBPVR and do a little searching and reading on this forum. You won't find better help ANYWHERE.

I see that you have an HVR 2250 which is capable of receiving digital signal, but unfortunately, Verizon encrypts most of their channels.

The only way to receive digital cable with your HVR 2250 is through a direct conection to the cable line, no STB in the middle. But unfortunately this will limit your ablility to receive many channels as most are encrypted and can not be decrypted through HVR 2250

Check here to see what free and clear channesl you can receive through verizon http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/channels_us

So if that can work for you then you can plug cable directly into hvr 2250 and set up your digital capture sources and use the hvr 2250 for the channels listed on the above site
HTPC Server: 2.3gh AMD Quad 9600, 4GB ram, 320gb HDD, 1TB HDD, and 750GB External USB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 8600gt, Win 7 (32bit), (2x) HVR2250 using QAM

Client: AM2 5600, biostar 790GX (onbard HD3300), 4gb memory, Vista, LM remote mapping app, Acer Revo R3610 (Atom N330) Win 7, 785G (HD 4200), Win 7, 4gb ram

I understand that the HVR2250 has two tuners, either of which can record in digital or analog. IIRC, it has only one RF input for cable and one A/V input that will take S-Video in. I'm not really familiar enough to recommend a setup, but I think you can configure it in GBPVR as three sources, two digital sources taken from a splitter direct from the wall (before the STB) and one analog S-Video input. If you set up the digital sources first, GBPVR would preferentially record your local TV channels in HD digital, assuming Verizon is sending them as unencrypted clear QAM (as most cable providers do). It could simultaneously record a HD local digital channel and one SD analog encrypted from the STB. (If you set up multirecord and TS, in some cases, it could do even 2 HD/SD or more locals simultaneously).
Perhaps someone with greater familiarity with the HVR 2250 will comment on your best setup. It's a very popular card.
