now I have got the PC and connected it to the TV and network and also initiated firmware update.

It shalll be fun to see how much time it will take me to get it working

I am a little bit worried about having non password protected access to files and guest account - but I guess I try with the default in dummys guide to get everything running

and hopefully I can then change user account.

I have multiple folders on different harddrives with videos and latest recording I hope I can map all.
Lets se.
Using DELL P4 1.5GB RAM 250 GB HD + DLINK DNS313 netdisk 1,5TB, 2 pieces of Hauppauge PVR150 w/45-button remote, 1 Popcorn Hour 110. Win XP SP3. GB-PVR v1.4.7 Plugins: Xrecord

Both the NMT network share and the gbpvr.cgi script can be updated to use a username and password. Guest access was simply easier for me to document and trouble shoot consistently.

However, if you are serious about security you are going to want to disable telnet on your NMT, since leaving it open is potentially more of a risk than guest access to the few files in the mvpmc folder. Most of the paranoia over Windows networking, guest access etc came from the dialup era, when there was no router between a home and the Internet.

Also if you could play files from a remote shares with your MVP, you will have exactly the same access with the NMT using GBPVR.

ok I used thall the instructions in the dummies guide and had about 1-2h configuring share and firewall issues then my PCH would connect to the server.

Then I used the installer - which worked very well so maybe 1-4 hours up and running.

still some problems but I must say the PCH is much faster than my MVP so I am happy.

Just jumping into this thread because I am sort in the same boat.
My MVP is still working, but I am in a quandry about what to buy to replace it.
Although the PCH sounds great, do I really need "yet another client device"?

I already have an MVP, a Wii, and (soon) a Linksys 2100 (MCE extender). WHY can't these extender folks get their act together and produce a SINGLE programmable client that we can use for any backend?

The only workable option today, in my mind, is a quiet HTPC that will do it all, reguardless of what backend you're using.

I keep looking at an Athlon II x 2, or even a Sempron 140, bundled with a Gigabyte GA-MA785 motherboard. Add a low-profile case, an MCE remote, and a super quiet 2.5" HD....it's only about $200 from newegg.com.

I would still go with a refurb $99 PCH. Quiet, small, works a treat.

From what I've heard on here, and I DO trust the folks on here, PCH is a tremendous solution, especially for the price.

I just want to be able consolidate ALL my media clients into ONE box and you would THINK that would be possible. It's seems a bit tricky though. Smile

The advantage of the PCH is that it avoids questions about media that it supports such as your recent post http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=43890 I doubt you could can put together a system for $200 that avoids problems with 2009 digital media even without the OS.

Really most of the decision is personal choice, similar to the question why did you buy a Wii and not an xbox360 or PS3?

Media extenders tend to become obsolete, but then again the PCH has been available for going on two years now, and it is still going strong and I expect it will be viable (where there isn't LATM audio) for several more. I figure Syabas will stop selling them with an non-GBPVR compatible replacement before they fail to play most broadcast media.

Um...well..the audio problem I referred to in that other postl,. which you've reference, has nothing to do with a media extender - MVP, PCH or whatever.

The problem that I am seeing that on the PC, which is both client and server, must be something else. Whatever it is, it eludes me, which I why I posted a "help" call. Big Grin

But the point about the PCH being a versatile media client is well-taken.
I certainly have never meant to put it down in any way.

I disagree. With a media extender you don't mess with codecs, decoders etc, which is probably your problem, bad audio PID would be silent. Digital broadcasts are streamed as captured directly to the PCH and your AC3 audio would play fine no fuss, no muss.
