Hard disk write cache

Does anyone happen to know what kind of affect on performance I should expect if I disable my hard disk's write cache in device manager? I've been recommended to disable it by other software I run on the same machine as GB-PVR in order to reduce the chance of data corruption if there's a power cut. I do get a lot of power cuts and can't really put a UPS next to the TV (mom acceptance factor).
I'm using a WinTV PVR 350.

When I was 1st setting up, I had some smoothness issues in play/viewing, and knowing about that function, I turned it off. I can't say it was part of improving things.

My system is pvr-only box, so it wasn't a hard choice. On my work/play box, I like becuase I've had the situation they describe happen and had files corrupted.

If you have a pvr-only system, my opinion is you can turn off. If you lose power, you're not going to be recording anything, anyway.
