Out of the box, Windows 7 MC plays h.264 encoded mp4 files for me, but I don't get any video playing back the same file in GBPVR with the h.264 decoder set to the Microsoft version. Anyone had any luck playing back h.264 files with Win7 without installing a separate codec pack?

You should get h.264 video in GB-PVR with this decoder, assuming you're playing a ".ts" file. You wont get AC3 audio etc without extra decoders though, since the Microsoft audio decoder does not allow AC3 in 3rd party apps.

Where did the h.264 file come from, and what file extension does it have?

Do you have the Microsoft H.264 decoder selected on the playback tab?

The files I'm trying to play are .mp4 files encoded using handbrake. The video encoding is H.264 and the audio is AAC. I actually do get the audio with windows 7, just not video. Is the MP4 container causing the problem? I guess if MS is going to disable AC3 decoding in 3rd party apps, they may do the same with their H.264 decoder.

I have just had problems with video playback on these files with ffdshow and wondered if the windows decoder would fix the problem. Usually they play fine, but occasionally there is a green band down the middle of the video, or the video doesn't show up at all. Restarting PVRX2 usually fixes the problem.

It could just be my system set up, but they play fine in Windows media player.

GB-PVR plays no part in the playback of .mp4 files. It just askes directshow to play the file. None of the decoder settings in the config app will have any effect when playing this type of file.

This h.264 decoder does actually work fine for playback of .ts files in GB-PVR. I dont know what it wouldnt like about your .mp4 files though. It probably more comes down to the source filter being used for this file type on your machine.

Thanks for the helpful info, sub. I'll see if I can get it up and running and post back any findings.
