Add me to the list of people who would love to see GP-PVR be able to use the CableCard tuners for the "unlocked" channels.

Don't mean to bump and old thread, but I wanted to clarify one point.

Does getting CableCard support in GB-PVR simply require getting sub access to a Cablecard installation? Or is there any licensing involved?

I ask because the wife requested "a Tivo" which basically means I've been given the green light to spend money. Big Grin I'm still weighing the options and a new GB-PVR build is one of them.

There would be substantial license costs involved if sub were to provide native support but the method we are proposing is to write a bridge between GBPVR and MCE so that GBPVR tells Media Center what to record and when. If the program does not have the Copy Once/Never flag set, GBPVR should be able to play the recording. If it does have the flag set, the recording will be encrypted and you will need to watch the recording in Media Center.

Thanks for the feedback. I finally stumbled across a recent review from Engadget which states, "a CableCARD tuner requires lots of extra electronics and an $80k CableLabs certification process." Something tells me we won't be able to raise that kind of capital. Smile That being said, I'm going to preorder the card. I've already got Windows 7 so all I need to do is upgrade my RAM and get some more storage. Ok, maybe I don't need to upgrade my RAM. I just want to. Big Grin

Here's the link to the article if anyone is interested.

A bit off the subject but what's not yet truly utilized with cablecards is tru2way. Many believe if Silicon and Ceton do well in their sales, more companies will get involved and tru2way may take off. I know Hauppauge is one that is working on a CC tuner but has been very quiet about it. You can read more about it at http://www.ctam.com/html/tru2way/gallery.htm.
And, a video tour from Panasonic here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0Z2WBfUTpc

For those in the US FCC is pushing hard on cable and satellite providers about the strangle hold they have on digital network, they want these companies to provide customers with a easy way of viewing and recording TV like it was back in the days of VCR. Also looking at a way to stop these companies from forcing customer from having to use set top boxes to get HD TV, as for me I'll set back and wait to see if anything ever becomes of this.

I like to see FCC finally do some good for once as stopping the run away train these companies get away with as forcing us to buy or rent there equipment to watch TV, right now I still using SD cable and refuse to pay extra to get HD that is running through there cable network already and pay 12 bucks a month to watch HD will never happen!

If and only if I can buy a HD Tuner that will let me use my PVR the way I want to use it for "MY HOME" I will look back into getting HD......

Yeah, I'm not expecting much from the FCC to help consumers. What they are proposing now is exactly the same end game that was supposed to be brought about by CableCards. They basically told the cable companies that the "must" make it easier then gave them extensions upon extensions and waivers upon waivers. Now they have allowed them to encrypt pretty much everything digital except for the locals while doing away with analog. The FCC can "say" whatever the hell they want but I don't buy it. They have allowed cable to become even less consumer consumer friendly since they got involved.

It may be the CabeLabs certification fee could disappear. See here:
