2.1.4 Can't play after changing a decoder until NPVR is exited and re-started

NPVR 2.1.4 on windows XP.

After changing a decoder, then attempting to restart playback, I get a message window saying:
"Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
If I select Details I get:

If I exit then start again, playback starts OK with the new choice of decoder.
There is no entrey made in the NPVR.log when the error comes up.
