videos plugin skinning question

So, in all the views the videos plugin can see the thumbnail, but can a skin see the fanart and nfo/xml file beneath? If so how do you do that in the skin? If not then is it difficult to take the existing code for the videos plugin and allow it to see the two files? I'm thinking of writing some code for that...

On the subject of writing a plugin where do I get the compiler to write plugins? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm working on a win 7 machine.
