I have found that on a lot of Motherboards - Gigabyte especially - that occasionally the USB ports either start misbehaving or go totally AWOL, usually after resuming from sleep.
I have found that if this happens, the only way to get them back in line is a cold reboot - i.e. shut down and pull the plug for about a minute - just restarting doesn't cut the mustard.

It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives
