I have an MVP, windows 7 with NPVR on it and server set to 1. My MVP says there are no servers.

I guess its a firewall issue. What do I need to set the windows firewall to pass for the incoming and outgoing rules?

I'm sure this is covered in a post somewhere but I failed to locate it.

Also there is a list of device MAC addresses on the setup MVP tab, it has 2 devices listed, how are these used? where do the come from?

TIA

You need the mvpmc dongle from the wiki open your firewall nrecord.exe and nextpvr.exe on the local lan for tcp and udp.

You need to setup a config.xml entry matching the MAC address of your MVP (sticker on the bottom I think), I don't know why the table was added or what it does.

Thanks for the info.

Just to clarify - open your firewall - as an incoming rule ?

I assume there is no need for specific outgoing rules as I guess everthing is allowed out by default.

And the MAC addresses I am guessing that the two in the list are just samples left in the config.

I figure why bother guessing how the user's firewall work and my suggestion is to allow all in/out on the local LAN.

Yes the two are just something you can use as a model.

ok - a little bit of progress.
When I start the MVP it finds the server and loads the dongle.
I've tried both the dongle that ships with nPVR and the extra one in the wiki.

Neither give me an interface that looks like nPVR.

The original dongle causes the box to reset or restart and it fails to start fully, just goes round in a loop configuring network, loading etc
The wiki dongle give a kind of setup menu - where I can view the files on the box and some other things - there is mention in the setup of mythTV.
I was kind of hoping for something that looked like nPVR - what's gone wrong?

The mvpmc dongle on the wiki (the only one you should be bothering with) will give you the native mvpmc UI after it time's out trying to connect to NextPVR

oh - so it's failing to load the dongle? but it does different things so it must be finding the dongle. hmm. Is the screen with http://www.mvpmc.com with four red dots and four green dots the native UI or the wiki one?
I've only changed the name in the config.xml file to dongle.npvr.bin and I placed it in the nPVR/Dongle folder.
any ideas what might be missing?

The dongle is transferred but linux and mvpmc might still not be running at that point, you'd need the nextpvr screen or another menu for mvpmc to load. You only have about 50 seconds for things to connect. I vaguely remember needing to load the hauppauge software if the server ip changes. Sorry it's too long.

I just went through this last week. I had to change my local subnet from192.168.1.x so that I could VPN to my home network while at other locations that also use the (almost universally default standard for SOHO routers) 192.168.1.x subnet. All of my MVP's lost their minds when the subnet changed. In order to get them online again I had to:

Go to C:\Users\Public\NPVR\Dongle on the NPVR server and rename my (mvpmc version) dongle.bin file to a temp name (mvpmc_dongle.bin) and then rename the dongle file that came with NPVR (which I had long ago renamed to NPVRStockDonngle.bin) to dongle.bin.

Next I removed power from each MVP for a few seconds and then reapplied power so the MVP would perform a hard reboot.

The MVP should now load the dongle and boot into the Hauppauge firmware (be patient, this may take a while).

Keep watching and you'll see a screen popup that says something to the effect of "Press OK within 3 seconds to select default network server". Press OK on the remote and the IP address of the server gets stored in your MVP.

Now go back to your NPVR server at C:\Users\Public\NPVR\Dongle and rename dongle.bin to NPVRStockDongle.bin. Rename your MVPMC dongle file to dongle.bin.

Back at the MVP, remove power again. This will force the MVP to reload the dongle at next power-on, but the server IP is retained in NVRAM. Reapply power.

It may take a couple of minutes, but the MVP should now find the server, load the MVPMC dongle, and finally go to the NPVR menu screen. Be patient! It takes quite a while the very first time that it gets loaded.

Now your MVP should work beautifully. All of mine work great after going through the above gyrations. Smile
