What video card do you have, and do you have the latest drivers installed?

I'm not running Windows 8, but I think I would've seen something on the forums by now if the end-user runtimes were not compatible with Win8.

mysterious failure of the directx runtime has happened to some users over the years, on various operating systems. sometimes if you install the full download version instead of the web install version it works. the link is in the tech support sticky.

some users have had to update or un-install/re-install their graphics driver. some users just never get it to work for no identifiable reason.

However, system requirements of "full download version" also predate Windows 8; and if I remember correctly, it isn't an installer. In post 4 (which probably should've begun a new thread), "other decoders" were mentioned. If perhaps those were hoborg's SAF6 pack, then this might already be be installed?

Something I've noticed is that the interface is very sluggish on my quad core computer. I think it is because the 3d graphics card is not being used to draw things.

The Direct x full install is a self extracting archive - after extract you have to go in and run dxsetup.exe.

It is not installed by default in 8 and I had to run the full install.

SAF6 and XBMC both install the DirectX runtime update as well... perhaps installing either of those will "kick" directx into submission.

You da man that worked. Installed the DX10 from the link and now the message about directx being missing is gone. Much much smoother now. Thanks!!!!
