Another update...

I still don't have a complete understanding, but since I've changed my router, the problem has vanished (even though IPV6 is enabled on the client & server).

I now suspect it has something to do with my old router not properly handling DNS requests made over IPV6, maybe leading to the client waiting for the request to timeout before using an alternative name resolution strategy. Or something like that!
