When I go into Music in nextpvr and it to play an mp3 file I understand that it just asks DirectShow to play the file. Anyone know how I can set the preferred decoder in a windows 64bit environment? I have tried a couple of filter managers but it doesn't seem to work, I suspect they only work on 32bit systems?

NPVR is a 32bit app though, so it shouldn't matter.

Have you tried rendering your MP3 file with GraphEdit to see what decoders it uses?

The problem lies not in which decoder npvr uses, 32 or 64 bit, the issue is where windows stores the merit settings in registry.

Trying that the graph comes up with a decoder called "MP3 Decoder DMO", which isen't even listed in any of tthe filter managers.
I'm at loss here... Sad

Above my pay grade now... but if I had the problem, in DSFM I'd make a note of the Module name and location, View Filter Properties and Unregister filter. If that didn't fix my problem, I would simply register it again.

SOLVED!

It turned out (after much digging) that the MP3 Decoder DMO is Microsoft's own mp3 decoder (wich sucks btw). I wanted to remove it but the key in the registry was write-protected so I had to change ownership and protection to get that done. Patching the registry is not recommended unless you REALLY know what you are doing.

Thanks for the tip about Graphedit, I had forgotten about it (I'm getting old). Now I can see that mp3's renderer through LAV splitter and LAV audio decoder Smile

That is the Microsoft decoder. It is listed in the Codec Tweak Tool that comes with K-Lite. I don't know if NextPVR uses merit or preferred though so you might be looking for the wrong setting.

It obviously uses merit, and "Direct Show Manager" from Softella actually works on 64bit windows too.
