I recently had cablecard issues so HBO would not work anywhere. After speaking to Verizon it now works in WMC, but when I open an HBO channel in NPVR it goes black and then a green screen pops up and stays there.

That sounds right, HBO is often not copy-freely.

I was unaware of that. I thought I had used HBO in the past. Are there any ways around this? Or am I forced to use WMC when I want to watch HBO?

edit: is there a way to have XBMC or NPVR recognize the .wtv files that are created by WMC?

If you had HBO in the past, then its possible your cable company wasn't encrypting that channel in the past, but is now. Usually HBO would be copy protected, and not usable in anything other than WMC.

Neither XBMC or NextPVR would be able to view a wtv recording of HBO. These are encrypted any only playable in WMC.

No if there is DRM involved, you can't even play them on other instances of WMC. You can configure NextPVR to launch WMC for playback of WTV files.

What about this card that doesn't care about DRM; http://dx.com/p/hdmi-1-3-pci-express-hig...-961072046

There are alternate solutions even with the NextPVR supported Hauppauge HDPVR devices. These are expensive because the device and the STB cost about $400 each. CableCard tuners are under $5 a month each and you can even get 4-6 tuner devices.

But can you record a show that is not copy-freely or copy-once with a cablecard and play it back on some extender or client?

Edit: This was actually the device I ment http://dx.com/p/hdmi-1-3-pci-express-hig...card-72046
It has fairly good reviews but a bit expensive.

use component inputs and you won't have to worry about drm at all...and picture isn't visibly different..
[HDPVR/colossus/and even that card you showed does component w/cables]
just have to have an stb that outputs component..[Red/Green/Blue]
nice thing about hdpvr is it compresses it in hardware so easy on system..[hdpvr about $150-200]
Hardware: HDHR Prime, HDPVR 1212, Raspberry pi2, VFD display w/LCDSmartie

That depends on your cable provider. I looked into a CableCard through Time Warner and every single one of their channels are now "copy-once" even with a CableCard, so no, it wouldn't work for me in that case. I'm "stuck" with two HD-PVRs and two cable-provided STBs. I use the Firewire Channel Changing with them and that's probably failed me once in the past two years, so it is pretty solid.

As mentioned, the component inputs work great and I can't really tell the difference in recorded content using them.
