Do you have the Hauppauge Tweak Tool program? It lets you make a lot of changes to the tuner for a better picture. Mine always recorded everything too dark until I started playing with the settings. It wasn't created by Hauppauge and it seems to have vanished from the net. But if you need a copy then PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy.

Being an NMT I didn't think there was anything I could do about it??

Just found a copy of it - will have a play. Do you know what it tweaks? Hardware, driver, registry or whatever? i.e. could I extract what it may have tweaked many years ago on the old gbpvr/XP machine??
I never checked to see where the changes were stored. I just know they worked miracles. I always assumed the changes were to the registry, but never confirmed it.
To quickly see the result of changes I would log into the server and launch the tweak tool, then start recording a program in NPVR. Next, I would play the show that was being recorded and jump ahead as far as possible in the recording. Then start making changes (you have to hit "Save" after each change, for them to take effect) and within a few seconds you'll see the change appear onscreen, as NPVR records and then plays back the file onscreen.

OK, thanks again all. It ended up being a bit of everything.
The bitrate in config had a large effect, tweaktool was ok for getting the brightness a bit better, and firing up wintv (after much heartache trying to get it working with it saying my server was a netbook and not installing!) - fine adjustment of the RF frequency made the most difference. All I have to do now is to play around trying to update the database in the right place to experiment and see if frequency can be quoted in kHzrather than channel as gbpvr could. (fingers crossed) and search/replace in an export/import of the db.
