usb2 won't record after reboot

After rebooting my computer, GBPVR doesn't show livetv or record until I've run WinTV2000 first. The status shows it's recording, for example, but the files created are zero-length. I'm using Wintv-pvr-usb2.

I had a similar problem, that it was showing up in device manager but when I ran any app including wintv2000 the screen was black and no sound. In the end I had to do a system restore in XP and load an older driver before it would work. Just changing the driver didn't work, so the only thing I can think off was that a system file or codec became corrupt.
