I abandoned XP for Vista for my server and clients about two years ago and this removed several annoying problems. Unfortunately Intel does not produce a Vista video driver for my new Celeron nettop client so have had to revert to XP as I don’t have a Windows 7 license.

XP seems to work reliably most of the time apart from certain programmes which cause the video to freeze although the sound continues. What causes the problem is a still image such as a photo, map or text on screen for a few seconds. I watched a news quiz last night which was especially bad locking up every minute or so when there was a full screen photo or image from a newspaper. Its similar to a problem I previously reported which disappeared when I moved to Vista which was then caused by some images at the start of commercial breaks.

You were probably using EVR video renderer with Vista, as am I; but VMR9 (or variants) is reportedly best with XP. Or it might be video decoders. Did you install SAF "unlocked"? Is this happening with SD, HD or both? Did you install the R1 patches? R1a includes Patch 24 relating to XP playback, although reported symptoms were not identical to yours. Try unchecking "Use alternate OSD with missing video" on Misc2, if it's currently checked. If all else fails, zip and attach your Logs folder.

My previous HTPC was XP-based. The only renderer which worked reliably and did not have video "tearing" was VMR9 FSE.

Thanks for the replies. VMR9 FSE is the default renderer when installed on XP. This is playing back SD recordings. I usually use the Cyberlink Video/SP decoder but have also tried PDVD13 video decoder, FFDSHOW and even the LAV video decoder but all lock up the same. I have installed the R1a patch but it makes no difference. "Use Alternate OSD......" is already unchecked. It seems to lock up if the display image is still for about 3 seconds.

There is no change is the logging at the point the video stops. NPVR.log just contains "GetDuration Returning 3950" every 1/10 second. Enclosed is NPVR.log. The video froze at 20:57:52. The original "Recording" has been deleted so I am using "Open File" to play the duplicate file on the server but it behaves exactly the same.

Possibly related to the last command, although I don't understand how sound could continue:

Code:
2014-01-17 20:57:32.781    [DEBUG][1]    OnKeyDown() called: {CTRL}O, Control
2014-01-17 20:57:32.781    [DEBUG][1]    Play()
2014-01-17 20:57:32.781    [DEBUG][1]    OnKeyDown() done. Took 0 ms
2014-01-17 20:57:32.781    [DEBUG][1]    OnKeyDown() called: MediaPlayPause
