Computer Goes to Sleep in mid-Stream

Hi,

When streaming recorded TV to my iPhone my computer goes to sleep at the time I have set (30 minutes) even though the show is not over. I guess the PC does not sense that there is "activity" and goes to sleep.

Is there a setting I can set that would make the PC think the there is "activity" and keep the machine on until the show/stream is finished?

I would guess the inactivity setting g on the computer checks for keyboard and mouse activity which would not be occurring while streaming.

Seems there is a setting in vlc to not let the pic sleep. Some complaints about the computer not sleeping if video is paused though...

Thanks for the reply, UJB. It got me thinking and searching. Going to sleep while streaming seems to be a common problem (for PCs and people ).

I think I'm going to try this little utility from SourceForge to address the PC:

Coffee

"Coffee will keep your computer wide awake while your downloads or network transfers complete. Coffee prevents standby when your traffic speed on a selected network adapter is above the user configurable threshold."

Sounds like a useful utility. I'm convinced W7 has a more aggressive sleep routine than my old XP server.

OK, success. I installed Coffee and streamed a 2 hour recorded TV show to my iphone and the PC (W7) did NOT go to sleep during the show. Coffee kept it awake past my 30 minute sleep time allowing me to watch the entire thing. After the show was over my PC went back to its normal sleep pattern.

After installing Coffee I observed the upload and download speeds to get an estimate of the background values for my PC while it was idle and then the values while it was streaming. I then set my thresholds in Coffee. I set the download value relatively high (3000 KB/s, I only want it to postpone sleep if there is a big download going on) and upload (streaming) value just below the minimum I was seeing when streaming but above background levels (200 KB/s). YMMV.
