I have the X-newa installed in kodi but it doesn't want to skip for me, wrong setup?

It uses the kodi player, so you have to use the kodi remote buttons. So to skip forward you press the right arrow instead of the FF or Next Track buttons. (And left arrow instead of RW or Previous Track)

I am using a Roswell mce remote so I am pretty certain I need to change the key assignments.

It might be you aren't playing from a file share and failing over to http.
