When you watch an AVI all the decoding is done on the PC, so additional things like subtitles etc can be added to the picture relatively easily. This is not the case with MPG files. With MPG video all the decoding is done on the MVP by the Hauppauge MVP software/hardware, which doesnt not provide any mechanism to display subtitles. This is all running on the actual MVP and cant use filters or anything (including DirectVobSub).

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah *smacks forehead*
Now it makes sense...

So the only way is to make a batch that 1) extracts the CC to a SRT file, and then 2) somehow automate the addition of the text inside the video frames.... (probably involves reencoding the file, so I'm not sure there are batch type tools to do this)... I'll look into it...

If you can figured it out, let me know. I really want to use an MVP, but *must* have captions. I'm holding off on the purchase of an MVP until I know there is a solution.

Yes this sort of solution is possible, but would have two negative aspects:

1) re-encoding would be required (reduced quality, time consuming)

2) subtitles would always be visible, with no way to remove them
