Best way to determine Codecs

Just hoping for some tips & tricks to determine codecs. If I run a recording and it's a black screen, can view it using VLC, can I mess with the codec settings and not restart NPVR? I'm hoping this will work so it'll make it easier to figure out what codecs I need. I've done a lot of uninstalling and installing and trying saf codecs, which doesn't seem to have done much. I'm thinking I did something wrong on install.

You don't have to restart NextPVR. When you start playing a recording, it'll use your new settings.

Usually it would tell you which decoder it's missing (like MPEG2 or H264 etc).

If you can't end up getting it to give you video, supply a sample recording and I'll check if there is anything more fundamental going on.

Yeah it doesn't say I'm missing anything. One Recording which is too large to send has sound after a bit, no video. Another recording which is in the link doesn't have eiether but I can play any of the recordings in VLC, dropbox plays it...

EDIT: I was just messing around and had a recording that was running in the background, though it was black and silent after about a minute it came on at the start of the recording.

Dropbox provides cloud storage and nothing more ... Dropbox does not play video. The clip is stored on a Dropbox server and played using decoders that are on your computer.

It is likely that ... a decoder problem would apply to the entire recording and would be consistent through the entire recording ... that is black screen or no sound from beginning to end of the playback.

If the playback changes ... for example, black screen to begin then playback starts after one minute (or vice versa) ... that is likely to be a recording issue.

In any event, you can use "cutchunk" to chop a piece from the beginning of a recording so that the recording can be investigated ... http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...y.CutChunk ... the chunk can be stored on Dropbox so that we can have a look.

I've determined it was a bad record. My recordings now are all good thank you for your time and patience.
