Best way to determine Codecs

Just hoping for some tips & tricks to determine codecs. If I run a recording and it's a black screen, can view it using VLC, can I mess with the codec settings and not restart NPVR? I'm hoping this will work so it'll make it easier to figure out what codecs I need. I've done a lot of uninstalling and installing and trying saf codecs, which doesn't seem to have done much. I'm thinking I did something wrong on install.

Usually it would tell you which decoder it's missing (like MPEG2 or H264 etc). If you can't end up getting it to give you video, supply a sample recording and I'll check if there is anything more fundamental going on.

Yeah it doesn't say I'm missing anything. One Recording which is too large to send has sound after a bit, no video. Another recording which is in the link doesn't have eiether but I can play any of the recordings in VLC, dropbox plays it...

I've determined it was a bad record. My recordings now are all good thank you for your time and patience.
