I have a few .mp4 files with subtitles embedded.
If I try to play them in NPVR the right click menu says subtitles 'disabled', and I cannot find any setting in v3.9.2 (161119) to switch them on!!
They will play in VLC player if I switch on the subtitles from the right click menu.

How do I set up NPVR to play the subtitles?

I am guessing that you are playing the files via Videos ... NextPVR invokes Windows Media Player (WMP) to play files that are not recordings and allows WMP uses its default decoder for the file type. It may be that this default decoder does not support the subtitles.

What happens if you try and play the files, and subtitles, through WMP?

In general, this subtitles feature is aimed at .ts files, like the files NextPVR records. Other file types is depends on what components Windows uses to play them. If you install the LAV Splitter, Windows is likely to use this for the playback of your .mp4 files, and it supports the API NextPVR uses to ask Window what subtitles exist in the files being played, and allows NextPVR to switch subtitles.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the help with this.
I installed LAV Splitter and it works for me, I have tested it with .mp4 and .mkv files so far without problems.
Great support

If you want to automate subtitles you can use the advanced settings in LAV Splitter.

Settings as above.

Audio:
Code:
chi,eng

Subtitles:
Code:
eng:eng|f eng:off *:eng

This will give:

Audio - Preferred Language Chinese (Other Languages are available!) followed by English.

Subtitles - If Language is English only show forced subtitles, no other subs. Any other language show English Subtitles

Other flags such as hearing impaired etc. can be used - see the readme in the LAV folder.
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh
