Thought I replied to this, but maybe not. Anyhow, here is what you requested. They are both "Progressive" which is a mystery to me. I suspect that the first time I recorded this with NexPVR, I had NOT previously run Hauppauge Capture. Is it possible that Hauppauge Capture is putting the Colosus 2 into some mode that then allows NextPVR to record "Progressive"? I cannot explain this. This was same channel, and even the same movie.

Also, using the progressive file, DVDFab converted it to compressed MP4 perfectly in about 5 minutes. Obviously, there's something amiss with their "Deinterlace".

OK, this is going to make me crazy. Maybe someone can help explain. I originally had my Colossus 2 on one of the outputs from a 1x4 HDMI splitter. I decided maybe the splitter had something to do with this issue, so I tried connecting the Colossus directly to the Verizon FIOS box. No picture at all in Hauppauge Capture. I don't know if this was HDCP or what, but no pic. Said it had a signal, but no video showed up.
OK, so I temporarily put the splitter back with nothing connected to it except the Colossus 2 on one of the outputs and the FIOS box on the input. Bingo. Picture is back in Colossus Capture, but it's 1080i! (The original problem).
So, I go ahead and connect my other two TVs to the splitter (both 1080p capable) and turn on a TV. It says that it is seeing 1080p. So, I start up Hauppauge Capture, and it is seeing 1080p.
Now, the "documentation" for the splitter (Keliiyo 1x4) says that it will set itself to the "least common denominator" for all outputs. I don't know how this actually works, but I suspect the splitter is somehow what's causing the 1080i/1080p thing.
It appears that once I turned on the TV, it decided to be 1080p, and even the Colossus 2 (which says it's 1080p cabable) is 1080p.
My worry now is that I'm not sure what EXACTLY happened, therefore I don't know how to prevent it in the future.

I suspect you're right - it's something to do with the HDMI handshake and format negotiation.

You're also right that the splitter was probably required to remove the HDCP, allowing your Colossus 2 to get a picture.

I'm not sure what you could do about it though.

It appears that if the ONLY output from the splitter is the Colossus, then Colossus does 1080i. However, if the splitter sees a 1080p, it seems that Colossus also goes to 1080p. Does this make any sense?
The FIOS box ALWAYS outputs 1080p. It makes no difference what channel or whether the feed is SD or HD. I have verified that, so the splitter is not changing due to input. It's something to do with the "output" side. I just don't want it to drop to 1080i on me when I don't expect it, I guess. It's also interesting that the splitter doc says is "supports HDCP". To me, this would mean is PASSES HDCP. But it apparently removes it.
I hate these mysteries.

I'm guessing that is not quite correct. I'm guessing its more like "The FIOS box ALWAYS outputs 1080p, when the upstream device says it supports 1080p".

You could try talking to Hauppauge, but I'm not sure they'll do anything about it.

It does support it in a sense that'll you'll still get a TV signal out of it, even if it has HDCP. I'm pretty sure the intention was to remove HDCP, but they can't clearly say this, since they're not allowed to do that.

Well, I guess I can just fire up Hauppauge Capture and see what is says before I schedule recordings. It seems that I get progressive recordings from NPVR when Capture says it sees 1080p. Still kind of in the dark here, but whatever it takes I suppose.

It could be a timing issue, after a channel change with my STB, there is a brief time when there is no signal at all. You could probably confirm this by watching one channel, exiting the channel and recording the same channel.

This thread is probably the most applicable, https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.ph...ange/page2 not sure if sub ever changed it for live tv.

FWIW for me on linux I know I need to wait 4 seconds (not sure what the wait longer is) or v4l2 will crash trying to read the HDPVR

No, I don't think so. There is no delay after channel change that I have observed. The splitter DOES have a delay if nothing is using it, but so far it has not been an issue. If the TV is on already, then the splitter is alive and there is essentially no delay. I've had no issues with NPVR doing its thing, just getting 1080i files instead of 1080p files.

Thanks for the post.

I'm sure it'll be exactly the same in Hauppauge Capture.
