That actually makes sense both ntray and nextpvr need to connect to the recording service via local networking but recording should work independently

Ok - I have rebooted again (with VPN disabled) and all is working as it should.

Sorry to bother you - I would never have thought VPN would cause this mess (It would appear it has to be the cause).

Yeah, sounds like VPN is getting in the way of TCP/IP communication between nextpvr.exe and nrecord.exe (communicating via localhost), like it's trying to incorrectly route the request to somewhere on the other side of the internet.

If anybody else has this issue going forward and finds this thread by searching for the error in the first post, I ended up using the VPN provider's own windows program to whitelist programs (.exe files) to bypass VPN. I added all .exe files under the "C:\Program Files\NPVR" folder to this "whitelist" to bypass VPN.

You can add any .exe or websites/ip addresses to this whitelist and all traffic for these will be "split-tunneled" to a non-VPN pipeline.

Now I can have nextpvr running alongside the VPN.
