If you are comfortable figuring out dependencies and setting up a service from sub's instruction go with whatever you want for a desktop. Since sub targets Ubuntu I am not 100% sure if DeviceHostLinux will run on everything and also check that the distro has the firmware for your devices, with SiliconDust those shouldn't be issues.

If you want simple on any distro you could also go with Docker.

If that sound to complicated you should choose one of the many Debian based distros (Debian, Ubunutu) since the deb installer will do the heavy lifting, and I am hoping sub will support my idea that will lead to automatic updates. Most of the small non-Intel devices can run Armbian or Raspian too so you don't necessarily need a big host.

My NextPVR backend is headless so I don't even have a UI or desktop and do everything with SSH which is why I went with a Debian minimal install I knew I could install everything I need to get LIRC, my analog and HDVPR working.

Don't you mean advance recording functions are not in browser at this time.

Transcoding servers like Plex, Emby and the v5 server don't scale well to multiple users with simultaneous recording and comskip and I don't like needing the mouse and the keyboard but the web live TV is certainly stable enough on a good backend with one user.

My main concerns with using browser as a primary client is recording playback which are key in a PVR.  Clearly that has not been sub's focus and this is not a criticism.

- no resume
- doesn't save watch point for another client
- only 1 minute skipping (you can guess with the mouse but that is not fun)
- no comksip
- slower long skips
- recordings lists are still basic and require several clicks.

The fact that I need ctrl-f5 a lot and I can't store the admin/password in FF causes frustration too.

Dependencies are not the issue, system management is why I prefer using packages as opposed to compiling from source.  As I said, Debian and Debian based OS's are not my preference, but that is the direction that everything is moving.  All of my pi's are a Raspian, and I'm forced to go that direction on my laptop.  At least at work I still get to use RHEL and the like.   I'm not forced to, but I chose to use it because of my foundation.  We donate equipment to underprivileged schools in the Philippines and Ubuntu has a version called Edubuntu filled with educational programs.  if I want the kids to learn Ubuntu, then I need to be able to support it.   Undecided

If you've already created a NPVR v5 package for Debian OS's, then I'll go that way, most likely Ubuntu and if Sub puts up a repo like you suggest, then that makes life that much easier.   That way when he updates NPVR, all I have to do is do an apt upgade on the machine and the update is applied.

Thanks

Yes those good point which I sure sub will get around to addressing sooner or later as time goes by

There is no compiling required with the deb installer NextPVR is closed source I just use simple commands to automate the install.

The update process I am talking about will happen on restart no apt or dpkg required.

New Zealand is rugby mad. The Rugby World Cup is on at the moment. Ireland were playing New Zealand in a quarter final while I was on my fight from New Zealand the states. I had NextPVR v5 record it, in Docker, on Linux, and use ffmpeg in PostProcessing.bat to reencode to HEVC, so I'd have a chance of downloading it using free airport wifi in the file in the couple of hours I was at San Francisco airport, before boarding my flight across the states. Worked perfectly., and I managed to avoid hearing the result before watching it. I'd downloaded it with 10 minutes of clearing immigration/customs.  I was very pleased to have this 2.5 hours of viewing material.

Good on you sub, as a fellow Kiwi I'm chuffed to be able to do something similar when on holiday. You'd have been chuffed with the result too :-).

Martin's been bearing the brunt of my queries about a glitch watching in-progress recordings and I'm sure he's seen the RWC path names in test files. Rugby to many Kiwis is probably like Martin and his beloved Ice Hockey / Stanley Cup. And thank you Martin for your patience, RWC only happens once every 4 years...
